Football season is knocking at the door; but in the house of dread it's still basketball season - and it will continue to be for as long as it takes me to finish these next three dread galleries. That won't be long, though, because in an attempt to save time I'm trying something different: I'm only going to post the photos; it'll be up to you to figure out who everybody is!
Seriously though, as we take a look at the recently (?) concluded 2013-14 College Basketball season in DG152, DG153, and DG154, for most of the photos I just didn't take the time to research the exact points of the game when the photos were taken; so I guess you'll have to use your imagination. Although I'm doing only half as many dread galleries as last season, I will have at least one photo of every player with dreads in Division 1 that I know of; and I'll be including this season's stats for most of them. (If I don't list a player's stats, it means they were already listed in the dread news report I did three weeks ago.)
Let's begin dread gallery #152 in the Big 12.
1. D.J. Johnson, a 6-9, 250-pound sophomore F for Kansas State, grabs a rebound against G Jeff Mullahey of Troy during 2nd half on Dec. 15. Johnson had 7 rebounds and 3 points in 18 minutes as the Wildcats rolled to a 72-43 home win over Troy, part of their 7-0 December.
.
2. A couple of heavyweights - D.J. Johnson and 260-pound F Tarik Black of Kansas - battle for possession on Feb. 10. D.J. - short for Darrell Jerome - had a strong game with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots in 19 minutes as K-State, despite blowing a 68-59 lead with 1:53 to play, picked up a rare (for them) win over Kansas 85-82 in overtime.
.
3. D.J. Johnson wrestles for a rebound with star G DeAndre Kane of Iowa State during 1st half on Mar. 1. Johnson hit all 5 of his FG attempts in the game, finishing with 12 points and 6 rebounds in 16 minutes as the Wildcats picked up their 20th (and last) victory of the season, 80-73 over Iowa State. When K-State and Iowa State meet next season, there may be 4 players with dreads in uniform (!). Former Georgetown F Brandon Bolden will be Johnson's teammate, while ISU has two junior college transfers with dreads set to join their team.
.
4. D.J. Johnson comes down with his only rebound of the game in front of Kentucky F Willie Cauley-Stein during 1st half of an NCAA Tournament 2nd round game on Mar. 21. Johnson also had 1 point and 1 blocked shot during his 4 minutes on the court as the Wildcats' season ended at 20-13 with a 56-49 loss to Kentucky.
D.J. JOHNSON (2013-14): 33 games, 14 MPG, 3.5 PPG, 51.1 FG%, 3.5 RPG
.
5. 6-8 F Aaron Ross of Texas Tech drives to the basket at Arizona on Dec. 3. Ross finished with 10 points (one of his 4 games in double figures), 2 rebounds, and 2 assists in a season high 25 minutes, but the Red Raiders were blown out by Arizona 79-58. Ross, who redshirted in 2013 due to a knee injury, averaged just 10 minutes a game during his 2014 freshman season but should see much more playing time from here on out.
.
When the season began, there were two players with dreads in the Big 12. But then, all of a sudden there were three .....
6. Taurean Prince's Christmas wish must have been to get his hair twisted into dreads, because here he is with baby dreads in Baylor's first game after Christmas, waiting for a rebound next to ORU F Shawn Glover on Dec. 30. Prince scored 16 points in his first game with dreads - the third of his 8 games in double figures - and added 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in 23 minutes in Baylor's 81-55 home victory.
.
7. Shortly after debuting his dreads, Taurean Prince made another change, deciding he wanted to be referred to by his full name; and so he became Taurean Waller-Prince, here going to the basket against TCU C Karviar Shepherd on Jan. 11. Waller-Prince hit 8 of 10 shots from the field for a season high 23 points and had 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 5 fouls in 20 busy minutes as the Bears whipped TCU 88-62.
.
8. Taurean Waller-Prince, a 6-7, 210-pound sophomore F, tries to take the ball away from West Virginia G Eron Harris during 1st half at Waco on Jan. 28. Waller-Prince had 11 points and 3 rebounds in 19 minutes, but the Bears dropped their 5th in a row, losing to WVU on a basket with 3 seconds to play, 66-64.
.
9. Taurean Waller-Prince wastes no time picking up his 1st foul, falling for a fake by Texas Tech F Jaye Crockett just 48 seconds after entering the game during 1st half on Mar. 1. Crockett made 1 of the 2 ensuing FT to cut Baylor's lead to 12-10. Waller-Prince played only 6 minutes, finishing with 3 points and 4 rebounds, as the Bears, who were once 2-8 in the Big 12, improved to 7-9 with a 59-49 home win over Texas Tech.
.
10. Here's a good look at how much Taurean Waller-Prince's dreads had grown by the end of the season, as he goes for a rebound along with teammate Cory Jefferson and F Connor Lammert of Texas during 1st half of a semifinal game in the Big 12 tournament on Mar. 14. Baylor won the game - their 6th straight - 86-69 but then lost the next day to Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game. The Bears then advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Waller-Prince scored only 5 points in the Bears' three games, including none in their season-ending 69-52 loss to Wisconsin.
TAUREAN WALLER-PRINCE (2013-14): 38 games, 14 MPG, 6.2 PPG, 46.5 FG%, 2.8 RPG
.
11. 6-3 freshman G Tony Wills of Illinois State puts up a shot over Wichita State F Cleanthony Early (left photo) during 1st half on Jan. 22 and goes the the basket for layup against Drake (right photo) on Feb. 2. Wills had 8 points against Wichita State - his 3rd highest scoring game of the season - in a 70-55 loss and had 3 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocked shots in 23 minutes in the Redbirds' 75-57 win over Drake. Wills, who made my freshman all-America with dreads team, played in 33 of ISU's 34 games, all as a reserve, and averaged 16 minutes and 3.6 points, shooting 39.4% from the field. He figures to be a key reserve again next season, as the Redbirds try to improve upon an 18-16 record.
.
12. 6-4 junior G/F Rozell Nunn battles for a rebound against St. Louis F Tanner Lancona in his second game in an SIU-Edwardsville uniform (left photo) during 1st half on Nov. 13 and goes in for a slam dunk (right photo) three nights later against Central Arkansas. Nunn scored 10 points in 18 minutes in the game against UCA, the first of 13 times he scored in double figures. Rozell played in all 31 games in his first season for the Cougars (11-20) after transferring from junior college and was in the starting lineup in all but two of those.
ROZELL NUNN (2013-14): 31 games, 24 MPG, 8.7 PPG, 47.0 FG%, 4.1 RPG, 1.1 APG
.
13. 7-0, 270-pound senior C Moussa Gueye of Valparaiso doing what he does best - blocking shots - here rejecting Wright State G Miles Dixon in 1st half of a Horizon League game on Jan. 10, as the sick dreads of F Tavares Sledge look on. This was Gueye's only block of the game, and he also had 7 points and 7 rebounds (and 5 fouls too) in 16 minutes in VU's 62-45 win.
.
14. Moussa Gueye tries to get his hand on a shot by F AJ Pacher in the rematch against Wright State at Dayton on Feb. 25. In his first season with dreads and his only season for Valparaiso after playing his sophomore and junior seasons for Alabama, Gueye was the only player with dreads in Division 1 to average at least 2 blocked shots per game. His 71 total blocked shots included a school-record tying 7 (in 14 minutes!) in the game against Oakland on Feb. 9.
MOUSSA GUEYE (2013-14): 34 games, 16 MPG, 4.5 PPG, 56.1 FG%, 4.9 RPG, 2.1 BPG
.
15. Ohio State G Shannon Scott gets sophomore F Brandon Taylor of Penn State - and F Ross Travis too - to go for a fake during Big 10 action at Columbus on Jan. 29. Taylor fared a lot better on offense, scoring 19 points as the Nittany Lions upset Ohio State 71-70 in OT.
.
16. 6-7 F Brandon Taylor fouls Pittsburgh G Cameron Wright during 1st half of the Panthers' 78-69 home win on Dec. 3. Brandon's dreads don't look all that impressive when he's on the court because he's got two bands around them, which he doesn't need to do since his dreads aren't very long.
.
17. Brandon Taylor tries to drive to the basket, but G Traevon Jackson of Wisconsin is in his way during 2nd half of Penn State's final regular season home game of the season on Mar. 11. Taylor had 9 points and a season high 10 rebounds, but the Nittany Lions lost 71-66.
.
18. Brandon Taylor must have gotten all ball here, as Siena F Brett Bisping goes to the basket, because Bisping had no FT attempts during the CBI quarterfinal game on Mar. 24. Despite Taylor's 8 points and 8 rebounds, Penn State's season ended at 16-18 with the 54-52 loss to Siena. According to the team's website, Brandon has been losing some weight this summer, dropping down from 235 pounds, because he's expected to play more away from the basket next season.
BRANDON TAYLOR (2013-14): 34 games, 25 MPG, 9.2 PPG, 39.5 FG%, 4.9 RPG, 1.1 BPG
.
19. Staying in the Big 10 ..... JerShon Cobb, 6-5, 205-pound junior G for Northwestern, is having trouble staying with Wisconsin G Ben Brust on this play during 2nd half on Jan. 2. Cobb shot 3 for 12 from the field and scored 7 points as the Wildcats dropped their Big 10 opener at home 76-49. JerShon didn't have dreads in his first two seasons at NU but must have started growing them while he was suspended for the entire 2012-13 season; because when this season began, they were already well past the beginner stage.
.
20. JerShon Cobb takes a jump shot against Wisconsin G Traevon Jackson during 2nd half on Jan. 29. Revenge definitely was sweet for NU. 4 weeks after getting blown out by the Badgers, the Wildcats held them to 26% shooting from the field on their home floor. Cobb played all 40 minutes, finishing with 10 points and 6 rebounds in Northwestern's 65-56 victory.
.
21. JerShon Cobb takes it to the basket past G Ray Gallegos of Nebraska during 2nd half at Evanston on Feb. 8. Cobb led the team with 14 points and had 4 assists, but the Wildcats lost the duel of the two NUs 53-49, a loss that began a 7-game losing streak and ended their hopes of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
.
22. JerShon Cobb gets whacked on the nose by G Roy Devyn Marble while battling for possession during 2nd half at Iowa City on Jan. 9. Despite Cobb's 18 points and 7 rebounds, Northwestern got blown out by the Hawkeyes 93-67.
.
23. Against Michigan State on Feb. 13 JerShon Cobb passes the ball against the defense of G Gary Harris (right photo) during 1st half and G Denzel Valentine (left photo) during 2nd half. Cobb scored 22 points (the 3rd of his 4 games with 20+ points) and had 7 rebounds in the Wildcats' 85-70 loss.
A week later, after JerShon played 38 minutes in a loss to Ohio State, the NU coaching staff decided to shut him down for the rest of the season due to a "combination of a knee injury and a foot issue" according to the team's Twitter account. Here's hoping for a healthier senior season for Cobb, who barely missed making my all-America with dreads team this season.
JerSHON COBB (2013-14): 25 games, 34 MPG, 12.2 PPG, 41.1 FG%, 4.8 RPG, 2.3 APG
.
24. Also almost making my all-America with dreads team was Rafriel Guthrie, a 6-3, 210-pound senior G/F for Towson, shown here driving to the basket between G Dalton Pepper and F Anthony Lee during the Tigers' 75-69 home victory over Temple on Nov. 14.
.
25. For a large majority of the season Rafriel Guthrie kept his dreads reduced, sometimes so severely that it didn't even look like they were dreads. But at least he returned them to normal at the very end of the season, as here he handles the ball against the defense of G Rashawn Rembert during a 2nd round CIT game at East Tennessee State on Mar. 21. Guthrie had 12 points and 5 rebounds as the Tigers advanced with an 83-77 victory; but they were eliminated by Murray State in the quarterfinals, finishing the season at 25-11. Guthrie played at least 17 minutes in every game and was the Tigers' second leading scorer.
RAFRIEL GUTHRIE (2013-14): 36 games, 25 MPG, 11.4 PPG, 41.2 FG%, 2.9 RPG
.
26. Another player who preferred to keep his dreads reduced was Travis Elliott, a 6-8, 230-pound junior C for Bethune-Cookman, shown here shooting a layup against North Carolina A&T on Jan. 11. Elliott started almost every game but played only 20 minutes a game and had only two games in which he scored in double figures.
.
27. Malik Jackson, Bethune-Cookman's other player with dreads, goes to the basket for a layup against North Florida F Chris Davenport (left photo) on Dec. 21 and takes a jump shot in the Wildcats' season-ended loss at Coppin State in the 1st round of the MEAC tournament (right photo) on Mar. 11. In the foreground of the photo on the right, watching Jackson shoot, is Travis Elliott with his dreads bunched into a ponytail instead of reduced for a change. Jackson, a 6-6, 188-pound G who didn't debut his dreads until his senior season, arguably was the Wildcats' best player this season; but it didn't amount to very many victories as Bethune-Cookman finished with a 7-25 record.
TRAVIS ELLIOTT (2013-14): 32 games, 20 MPG, 4.5 PPG, 41.7 FG%, 4.9 RPG
MALIK JACKSON (2013-14): 32 games, 26 MPG, 10.8 PPG, 39.9 FG%, 4.3 RPG
.
28. In my First Look post back in January, I had a photo of Alcorn State sophomore F Tyrel Hunt defending a drive by Creighton F Doug McDermott during the Braves' season-opening 107-61 loss on Nov. 8. This is a different shot of that same play. In his first season with dreads (or should I say partial dreads) Hunt played less than he did as a freshman (9 MPG this season, 15 MPG last season). But at least he was on the court for most of the Braves' games during their 12-19 season.
TYREL HUNT (2013-14): 26 games, 9 MPG, 3.0 PPG, 42.2 FG%, 1.4 RPG
.
29. Also in my First Look post, I declared myself incompetent for not having 6-7 senior F Parris Massey on my list of players with dreads. But now I understand why I didn't - it's because UMass-Lowell wasn't in Division 1 until this season. Massey, shown here fouling G Kevin Johnson during a 79-49 loss at Cincinnati on Nov. 26, began his career at Division 1 Sacred Heart but redshirted both of his seasons there (due to injury) before transferring to UMass-Lowell. Massey, who dreads are much longer than they appear in this shot (I couldn't find a better photo) had a team-leading 27 blocked shots for the River Hawks, who after a 1-11 record during the 2013 portion of their schedule, went a respectable 8-8 in their first season in the America East.
PARRIS MASSEY (2013-14): 27 games, 11 MPG, 2.4 PPG, 59.6 FG%, 2.6 RPG, 1 BPG
.
30. Dominique McKoy, a 6-8, 215-pound junior F for Duquesne, teams up with G Jeremiah Jones to box out F Dwayne Evans during a Saint Louis FT attempt during 2nd half on Feb. 27. McKoy finished with 9 points and 7 rebounds as Duquesne, who had lost 6 of their previous 7 games, pulled off one of the more surprising upsets of the season, ending the 10th ranked Billikens' 19-game winning streak with a 71-64 road win.
.
31. Dominique McKoy lays one up - and hopefully in - against forwards Deion Taylor (#11) and Trey Davis during a 1st round game in the Atlantic 10 tournament on Mar. 13. McKoy had 10 points and 8 rebounds as the Dukes' season ended at 13-17 with the 76-64 loss to Richmond. 10 points and 8 rebounds were a typical game for McKoy in a solid first season on the team after transferring from JC. His second-best-in-the-A-10 59.5 FG% was the best percentage by a Duquesne player in 23 years. He also led the Dukes with 35 blocked shots and earned a spot on my all-America with dreads team.
.
32. Last season High Point had two players with dreads, but this season just one. 6-1 senior G Dejuan McGaughy defends against G Drew Parker of UNC-Greensboro (left photo) in the season opener on Nov. 8 and defends along with ex-dread F John Brown as Syracuse F Michael Gbinije goes to the basket (right photo) during 2nd half on Dec. 20. McGaughy scored 13 points against UNCG and 7 against Syracuse for his two highest scoring games during the 2013 portion of the season. Dejuan was a key contributor for the Panthers in their first 15 games; but after he broke his hand during a practice in mid-January, he was a non-factor for the rest of the season.
DEJUAN McGAUGHY (2013-14): 18 games, 22 MPG, 4.8 PPG, 37.9 FG%, 1.8 RPG, 2.2 APG
.
33. Speaking of ex-dreads and speaking of Syracuse ..... here's 6-2 freshman G Ronald Patterson, trying to fight through a screen by Binghamton F Alex Ogundadegbe while covering G Marlon Beck during 1st half at Syracuse on Dec. 7. Patterson played 15 minutes and finished with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists (season highs in all 4 categories) in the Orange's 93-65 victory.
.
34. Ronald Patterson and G Trevor Cooney go over to congratulate F C.J. Fair (#5), thinking his basket has just tied the game at Duke with 10 seconds to play on Feb. 22; but Coach Boeheim has already gotten the memo that the foul actually was an offensive foul on Fair and the basket didn't count. Boeheim was so enraged that he picked up two technical fouls, ending any shot Syracuse had to still win the game. Two nights later Syracuse won at Maryland, and two nights after that Patterson said goodbye to his dreads: http://www.syracuse.com/orangebasketball/index.ssf/2014/02/fun_alert_syracuse_basketballs_ron_patterson_cut_his_dreads_we_have_evidence.html
Before losing his dreads, Patterson played in only 9 of Syracuse's 28 games and scored a total of 22 points. Presumably he'll play more often in the seasons ahead; but unless he grows his dreads back, it won't matter to me.
.
35. Senior F James Thomas of Sam Houston State stands by as Texas-Pan American G Shaquille Boga goes to the basket during the season opener on Nov. 8. Like Ron Patterson, Thomas started the season with dreads but didn't finish it with dreads; but Thomas didn't wait until the end of February. His dreads were already gone by the middle of December.
.
36. Conversely we have G James Young of Kentucky, who had dreads at the end of the season but not for the first four and a half months of the season. Playing his first game with dreads on Mar. 21, Young celebrates after a teammate's 3-pointer during a 56-49 victory over Kansas State in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. As mentioned in my dread news report, Young and his teammates had a very successful NCAA Tournament, and I was looking forward to seeing his dreads get longer in the NBA, after he was selected by the Boston Celtics. But not any more. Sad to say, Young has changed his mind and decided he doesn't want to have dreads. They're already gone after not even having them for 4 months.
.
37. Nate Rucker, 6-6, 240-pound junior F for Kennesaw State, defends as East Tennessee State F Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard drives to the basket on Feb. 2. Rucker scored 8 points in 15 minutes in KSU's 86-73 road loss. It was good to see Nate's dreads again after not seeing them since his freshman season at Northern Illinois in 2011. After a year at JC in 2012 and a redshirt year after transferring to Kennesaw State, Rucker (for some reason) was not eligible to play this season until Dec. 16, so he missed the Owls' first 10 games.
NATE RUCKER (2013-14): 20 games, 22 MPG, 9.1 PPG, 51.5 FG%, 3.6 RPG
.
38. Hunter Harris, 6-7, 235-pound senior F for East Tennessee State, looks to go to the basket at Georgia Tech on Dec. 7. Harris had 8 points and 2 rebounds as the Buccaneers dropped to 4-6 with an 87-57 defeat.
.
39. Hunter Harris goes to the basket for a dunk against Towson in a 2nd round game in the CIT on Mar. 21. Harris had 3 dunks in his final game in an ETSU uniform. The Buccaneers led by 11 early, trailed by 15 late, and lost at home to Towson 83-77 to finish the season at 19-16. Hunter made my all-America with dreads team in 2013 but had to settle for an honorable mention this season. He lead the Bucs in FG percentage and blocked shots.
HUNTER HARRIS (2013-14): 34 games, 25 MPG, 9.1 PPG, 52.8 FG%, 5.4 RPG, 1 SPG, 1.2 BPG
.
40. 6-8 senior C Terry Tidwell of Central Arkansas loses the battle for this rebound to Arkansas State F Kelvin Downs during 1st half on Nov. 24. Tidwell had 2 points and 2 steals in 17 minutes in a game in which the Bears got slaughtered 99-56. Tidwell, who missed the 2012-13 season (I don't know why), was back in action this season ...... for all of 5 games. After playing on Nov. 26 against Troy, he was no longer on the team (and I don't know the reason for that either).
TERRY TIDWELL (2013-14): 5 games, 12 MPG, 1.6 PPG, 40 FG%, 1.2 RPG
.
41. Before Tidwell left, there were two players with dreads on the roster for Central Arkansas. Here's 6-0, 185-pound junior G Oliver Wells, going up for a shot against Texas Tech on Dec. 15. Wells scored 14 points in this game, but UCA lost 79-57. Wells was a regular for the Bears in the first 8 games of the season; but after going scoreless in 29 minutes at North Texas on Dec. 17, Oliver played in only 2 games the rest of the season. I don't know why, but I don't think it was because he was injured. He won't be back for his senior season either, a victim of Coach Pennell's purge after the season was over. After the Bears went 8-21 in Pennell's first season, 11 players on the roster were told to transfer.
OLIVER WELLS (2013-14): 10 games, 18 MPG, 5.6 PPG, 44.0 FG%, 2.2 RPG, 1 APG
.
42. A couple of years ago, ORU had a star player with dreads by the name of Dominique Morrison. Now they have another, although 6-3, 200-pound sophomore G Korey Billbury's dreads have an unconventional look compared to the way most others get their dreads started. Here Billbury drives against ex-dread G Hameed Ali of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 4. Despite Billbury's 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, ORU lost at home 71-64.
.
43. Korey Billbury reaches for a rebound but gets Dwayne Evans in the face instead during 2nd half of the Golden Eagles' game at Saint Louis on Nov. 21. This might have been the only time all night that Billbury failed to get the rebound. He finished with a career high 15 boards, along with 6 points, 2 assists, and 2 blocked shots in a 72-55 defeat.
.
44. Here's a better look at Korey Billbury's dreads, as he battles for rebounding position against Northwestern State F Ryan King at Tulsa on Jan. 25. Despite Billbury's season high 29 points and 7 rebounds, ORU lost 87-83.
Korey is well on his way to being one of ORU's best players ever. This season he had 11 games with 20+ points and, at 6-3, became the shortest player to ever lead the team in rebounds. And of course, now that he has dreads, he also made his first appearance on my all-America with dreads team. After finishing at 17-16 while a member of the SLC this season, ORU is returning to the Summit League next year.
.
45. The dark background at Barclays Center in Brooklyn makes it a bit hard to see the dreads of Tulane 6-0 freshman G Jonathan Stark as he drives against F Wesley Iwundu of Kansas State in a game on Dec. 28. The Green Wave came out of the gate ice cold, shooting 13% (3-23) in the 1st half and falling behind 19-3 at one point. Stark was the team's only player in double figures with 10 points in the 72-41 loss to K-State.
.
46. Senior F Chris Anderson of Louisiana Tech uses his 6-inch height advantage over Jonathan Stark to his advantage in a battle for a rebound during 1st half at New Orleans on Jan. 16. Anderson finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists; while Stark was held to 7 points, 1 assist, and 5 turnovers as the Bulldogs cruised to a 73-45 victory. Tulane finished 17-17 this season. But when they lost, they lost big. 14 of the 17 losses were by 10 or more points. As was mentioned in my earlier two posts on college basketball, Stark was a bright spot for the Green Wave, playing 37 minutes a game and averaging 14.5 points as he made my freshman all-America with dreads team.
.
OK. We're going west for the rest of DG152. First stop: Bozeman, Montana.
47. For the second straight year Montana State fans were treated to a fine showing by the dreads of 5-11 sophomore G Marcus Colbert, shown here drawing an offensive foul against Montana G Mario Dunn late in 1st half on Feb. 3. Colbert, the Bobcats; starting point guard for most of the season, had 7 points and 4 rebounds as Montana defeated Montana State for the 7th time in a row, 70-66.
.
48. Four weeks later the Grizzlies made it 8 straight over the Bobcats. Marcus Colbert, here taking down one of his 2 rebounds against F Chris Kemp, had 4 assists and only 4 points in Montana State's 53-50 road loss. Certainly we'd love to see more players wear their dreads on the court the way Colbert does - I mean did - never bunching them and banding them very close to the head so that they flow very freely. Unfortunately though, Bobcats fans will not be treated to another season of viewing his dreads, as it appears that he has cut them off. I've been fooled by headshot photos before, but the current photo on the MSU website (and I'm almost certain it is a recent photo) shows Colbert is now clean cut. Too bad.
MARCUS COLBERT (2013-14): 31 games, 27 MPG, 9.4 PPG, 43.5 FG%, 2.1 RPG, 3.0 APG
.
49. While I may be able to deal with the loss of Colbert's dreads, I'd be really unhappy if Aaseem Dixon were to cut off his dreads. Thankfully there is no evidence of that happening. Dixon's dreads make their Division 1 debut here on Nov. 9 in a Northern Arizona uniform as he drives against UTSA G Hyjii Thomas. Dixon, a starter in 27 of the Lumberjacks' 32 games, had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 turnovers as NAU began the season with a 74-63 road victory over UTSA.
.
50. Aaseem Dixon, 6-0, 185-pound junior G from Las Vegas, gets his dreads jostled a bit as he looks to throw a pass against the defense of Arizona F Rondae Hollis-Jefferson at Tucson two nights before Christmas. Dixon finished with 9 points, 1 assist, and 4 turnovers as NAU, not surprisingly, suffered their ugliest loss of the season, losing to the top-ranked Wildcats 77-44.

51. Aaseem Dixon drives against Northern Colorado G Corey Spence during 1st half of a quarterfinal game in the Big Sky tournament at Ogden, UT, on Mar.13. The Lumberjacks, who trailed 56-36 with 9:15 remaining, cut the deficit to 60-58 when Dixon hit the last of his 6 3-pointers with 2:42 to play. But the Bears held on to win 62-60, ending NAU's season at 15-17. Dixon's sick dreads made him a starter on my dread all-America team; and he nearly earned a spot on my all-America with dreads team as well with his fine play. In his first season with NAU after a transfer from JC, he scored 20 or more points four times, including the 20 points he had in the season-ending defeat.
AASEEM DIXON (2013-14): 32 games, 32 MPG, 11.2 PPG, 39.4 FG%, 2.7 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.1 SPG

52. Neither junior G Dwight Smith of Colorado State nor freshman G Marcus Owens of Lamar can get a handle of the ball on this play during 1st half action at Fort Collins on Dec. 28. Smith had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in only 12 minutes; while Owens finished with 2 points and 1 assist in 8 minutes. Lamar dropped to 1-11 with the 86-71 loss to Colorado State.
.
53. 6-4 G Dwight Smith, who missed 10 games after suffering a broken hand in practice the day after the season opener, heads to the sidelines again after injuring his knee against San Diego State on Jan. 1 in just his 3rd game back after recovering from the broken hand. A couple of weeks later he injured his ankle and ended up playing a total of 6 minutes during the month of January before finally getting healthy in February.
.
54. Dwight Smith looks for a teammate to pass the ball to before UNLV G Bryce Dejean-Jones can tie him up in a game at Las Vegas on Feb. 26.
.
55. Dwight Smith tries to draw an offensive foul but is called for a blocking foul instead as Bryce Dejean-Jones hits a layup to give UNLV a 25-18 lead midway through 1st half on Feb. 26.
.
56. Dwight Smith's dreads had such a great showing in the game at UNLV that I had to add another shot of them, as here he goes to the basket against F Roscoe Smith during 1st half. All three of these photos came during Smith's 6 minutes on the court. He finished with 0 points and 3 fouls in CSU's 78-70 loss.
.
57. Dwight Smith tries to deny Utah State G JoJo McGlaston on a drive to the basket during a 1st round game in the MWC tournament on Mar. 12. Smith scored a game high and season high 21 points and had 8 rebounds in 31 minutes, but the Rams' season ended at 16-16 with a 73-69 loss to Utah State. It would be Smith's final game in a Colorado State uniform. He will be playing his senior season about 30 miles southeast of Fort Collins after transferring to Northern Colorado: http://www.coloradoan.com/story/sports/college/csu/basketball/2014/05/28/csu-guard-dwight-smith-transferring-northern-colorado/9681673/
DWIGHT SMITH (2013-14): 18 games, 13 MPG, 3.2 PPG, 43.8 FG%, 2.3 RPG
.
When he gets to his new home, Smith will find he's not the only player with dreads on the team .....
58. ..... He'll be a teammate of 6-2, 190-pound G Anthony Johnson, shown here shooting a driving layup during the best game of his freshman season on Dec. 10 against Colorado College. Johnson scored 15 points (his only game in double figures) in 21 minutes in the Bears' easy 96-57 victory.
ANTHONY JOHNSON (2013-14): 24 games, 8 MPG, 3.5 PPG, 46.0 FG%, 0.9 RPG
