College FB '12 House Calls

Alabama was the team with the most TD scored by players with dreads in 2011, but with Trent Richardson taking it to the house on Sundays in 2012, the Crimson Tide wasn't in the running for the top spot this season. They finished in 5th place. However, the crown will not be leaving the state of Alabama. Its new home is 100 miles or so southeast of Tuscaloosa, in the capital city of Montgomery.

When Isaiah Crowell left Georgia last summer and transferred to Alabama State, the Hornets instantly became top contenders for the crown. And sure enough, led by Crowell's 15 TD, ASU finished #1 in Division 1 this season. Of the Hornets' 48 total TD, 34 of them (71%!) were scored by players with dreads.
The 34 was just one shy of Alabama's winning total last season. Five different players with dreads took it to the house at least once for ASU - more than anybody except for Houston and FAU, who also had five.

Last season there were 9 teams in D-1 with 20 or more TD by players with dreads. That number dropped to 6 this season. But the number of teams with at least 10 TD rose significantly from 37 to 46. Here now is the complete list of all 46.

34
  • ALABAMA STATE - RB Isaiah Crowell 15, QB Greg Jenkins 8, RB Malcolm Cyrus 5, WR T.C. McWilliams 5, CB Corey Schofield 1
31
  • CLEMSON - WR DeAndre Hopkins 18, RB Andre Ellington 9, WR Sammy Watkins 4
26
  • ODU - WR Nick Mayers 16, RB Colby Goodwyn 7, WR Marquel Thomas 2, WR Kirk Spellman 1
25
  • GEORGIA SOUTHERN - RB Dominique Swope 17, RB Darreion Robinson 5, RB Tray Butler 2, S J.J. Wilcox 1
22
  • ALABAMA - RB Eddie Lacy 19, WR Kenny Bell 3
20
  • MOREHEAD STATE  - WR Donte Sawyer 10, WR Kevin Thomas 9, WR Kitaro Lewis 1

Isaiah Crowell's 2-yard TD run against Tuskegee during 4th quarter on Thanksgiving was Alabama State's final TD of the season and the Hornets' 34th TD by a player with dreads, tops in Division 1.

Sammy Watkins finishes off a 61-yard TD reception against Wake Forest in Week 9. Despite Watkins' scoring 9 fewer TD than he did in 2011, Clemson's team total increased from 29 last season to 31 in 2012, tops in the FBS.

  • JACKSON STATE - WR Rico Richardson 12, LB Ryan Griffin 2, TE E.J. Drewery 1
  • LOUISVILLE - RB Senorise Perry 11, WR Andrell Smith 3, CB Terell Floyd 1

  • STEPHEN F. AUSTIN - RB Gus Johnson 15

Sophomore A.J. Johnson earned a spot on my all-America with dreads team for his outstanding play on defense, recording at least 11 tackles in each of the Volunteers' final 10 games of the season; but he also did well enough as the Wildcat QB in goal line situations to lead the team with 6 rushing TD, including this 2-yarder against Kentucky in Week 13.

Arkansas State whipped MTSU 45-0 in their showdown for the SBC title in Week 14, but the competition was much closer between the two for TD by players with dreads. Junior Kyle Griswould (left) takes a reception 72 yards to the house for his longest gain of the season in Week 9, one of 15 TD by MTSU. But the Blue Raiders fell one short of ASU's 16 thanks to freshman J.D. McKissic's 31-yard TD catch (right) in the Go Daddy.com Bowl.

Michigan had 27 TD by players with dreads last season but didn't make it into double figures this season until Denard Robinson scored on this 67-yard run against Ohio State in Week 13, the last of his 42 career TD for the Wolverines.
.
.
Although Alabama didn't take the team title, a member of the Tide did take individual honors for the 2nd straight season. Eddie Lacy didn't come close to Trent Richardson's final 2011 tally of 24 TD, but his 19 TD were the most by any player with dreads this season. Here are the 26 players with dreads who reached double figures in TD.

Alabama RB Eddie Lacy 19
Clemson WR DeAndre Hopkins 18

Georgia Southern RB Dominique Swope 17

Dominique Swope gives Georgia Southern a 14-0 lead over Western Carolina with this 5-yard TD run in Week 6. Swope's 17 TD were the most by any FCS player with dreads.
.
.
Kansas State RB John Hubert 16
ODU WR Nick Mayers 16
Alabama State RB Isaiah Crowell 15
Bryant WR Jordan Harris 15
Stephen F. Austin RB Gus Johnson 15
Tennessee State RB Trabis Ward 15
Kent State RB Trayion Durham 14
UAB RB Darrin Reaves 14
North Dakota State RB Sam Ojuri 13
Eastern Illinois RB Jake Walker 13
Oregon State WR Markus Wheaton 13
Cal Poly RB Deonte Williams 13
Furman RB Jerodis Williams 13
Bethune-Cookman RB Isidore Jackson 12
Jackson State WR Rico Richardson 12
St. Francis (PA) RB Keion Wade 12
Eastern Washington RB Demetrius Bronson 11
Northern Illinois RB Akeem Daniels 11
Northern Colorado RB Tromaine Dennis 11
Louisville RB Senorise Perry 11

Senorise Perry (above) breaks free and takes it 47 yards to the house for his 1st TD of the season against Kentucky in Week 1. Perry very likely would have finished with more than 11 TD had he not missed Louisville's final 4 games of the season with a torn ACL. Ace Sanders (below) didn't make it into double figures until this 4-yard TD reception in 2nd quarter of the Outback Bowl, the 2nd of the 3 TD he scored in South Carolina's win over Michigan.

South Carolina WR Ace Sanders 11
Tennessee WR Cordarrelle Patterson 10
Morehead State WR Donte Sawyer 10
