2012 College Football All-America with dreads

In the first of my two all-America teams, we'll look at who I ranked as the best players with dreads in Division 1 for the recently completed 2012 season. Of the 48 players who made the 2011 team, 17 are repeat selections on this year's squad, while 18 others were drafted by the NFL. I'm happy to announce that the team is expanding to 72 players this season as I will be doing a 3rd team for the first time. But even with the upgrade, some really good players didn't make the cut and will have to settle for honorable mention. By my unofficial count there are 152 players with dreads in D-1 who earned all-conference honors in 2012, and 20 of those were recognized as all-America by the Associated Press. The 152 was down slightly from last year's total of 159. I tried hard not to forget or miss anybody; but if I did, please let me know.

The abbreviations for the statistics are the same as I've been using in the past. But here they are again anyway:
  • TFL = tackles for loss
  • INT = interceptions
  • PBU = passes broken up
  • FF = fumbles forced
  • FR = fumbles recovered
  • BLK = blocked kicks (either punts, extra points, or field goals)
  • TD = touchdowns
  • FG = field goals
  • HM = honorable mention
  • AP = Associated Press
When I list tackles, the first number is a player's total tackles, and the two numbers in parenthesis that follow are (solo tackles - assisted tackles). Stats are for the 2012 season only. And please note that the 1, 2, or HM in parenthesis after a player's name indicates where he ranked on the 2011 team.

Last year I started with the offense, so let's begin with the defense this time.

1st TEAM DEFENSE

DT

--- John Jenkins - Georgia . SR - 2nd team all-SEC - 50 tackles (22-28), 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU, 1 FR, 1 BLK
---  Will Sutton (2) - Arizona State . JR - Pac 12 defensive player of the year - 1st team AP all-America - 63 tackles (41-22), 23.5 TFL, 13 sacks, 5 PBU, 3 FF

DE

--- Jadeveon Clowney (1) - South Carolina . SOPH - SEC defensive player of the year - 1st team AP all-America - 54 tackles (40-14), 23.5 TFL, 13 sacks, 2 PBU, 1 FR, 3 FF
--- Brandon Sharpe - Syracuse . SR - 2nd team all-Big East - 39 tackles (23-16), 15 TFL, 7 sacks, 2 PBU, 1 FF, 1 safety

LB

--- Khaseem Greene (2) - Rutgers . SR - Big East defensive player of the year - 3rd team AP all-America - 136 tackles (70-66), 12 TFL, 6 sacks, 5 PBU, 2 INT, 3 FR, 6 FF, 2 TD
--- A.J. Johnson - Tennessee . SOPH - 2nd team all-SEC - 138 tackles (63-75), 8.5 TFL, 1 sack, 1 PBU, 1 FR
--- Jarvis Jones (1) - Georgia . JR - 1st team all-SEC - 1st team AP all-America - 85 tackles (52-33), 24.5 TFL, 14.5 sacks, 3 PBU, 1 INT, 2 FR, 7 FF

CB

--- Bradley Roby - Ohio State . SOPH - 1st team all-Big 10 - 2nd team AP all-America - 63 tackles (41-22), 2 TFL, 1 sack, 17 PBU, 2 INT, 1 FR, 1 BLK, 3 TD
--- Jason Verrett - TCU . JR - 1st team all-Big 12 - 3rd team AP all-America - 63 tackles (46-17), 5 TFL, 16 PBU, 6 INT, 1 BLK

S

--- D.J. Swearinger - South Carolina . SR - 2nd team all-SEC - 79 tackles (62-17), 3 TFL, 7 PBU, 2 INT, 2 FR, 2 FF, 2 TD
--- Phillip Thomas - Fresno State . SR - MWC defensive player of the year - 1st team AP all-America - 84 tackles (66-18), 12 TFL, 4 sacks, 5 PBU, 8 INT, 1 FR, 4 FF, 3 TD

PR

--- Ace Sanders - South Carolina . JR - 1st team all-SEC - 28 PR for 429 yards (15.3 average) and 2 TD

.
Jarvis Jones led the FBS in TFL and FF and was 2nd in sacks. He very likely will be the first player with dreads selected in the 2013 NFL draft about two months from now.
.

Anchoring the D-line are all-Americans Jadeveon Clowney (above) and Will Sutton (right). They finished tied for 2nd in TFL and tied for 3rd in sacks. They also both will be back for another season in college - Clowney because he has to (the NFL doesn't allow sophomores to be drafted) and Sutton because he wants to (I was shocked and ASU fans no doubt were delighted when he announced he was returning to the Sun Devils for his senior season).

.
The upgrade in competition brought out the best in Jason Verrett (left) and Phillip Thomas (right), you think? Verrett, who found himself facing prolific offenses almost on a weekly basis with TCU's move from the Mountain West to the Big 12, finished tied for 6th in the FBS in PBU and tied for 5th with his 6 INT. Thomas, playing his 1st season in the Mountain West after Fresno State's move from the WAC, deservedly was named 1st team all-America after recording ridiculous numbers. I mean, 12 TFL by a safety? You're kidding, right? And on top of that he led the nation in INT and scored 3 TD too.
.

Ace Sanders' 15.3 average on punt returns was 4th best in the FBS, and he took 2 returns to the house, including this one in the Outback Bowl. His next punt return figures to be on a Sunday. I was hoping he would hang out with the Gamecocks for one more season, but Ace has decided to skip his senior year and enter the NFL draft.

.

1st TEAM OFFENSE

OT

--- Antonio Richardson - Tennessee . SOPH
--- Xavier Nixon (2) - Florida . SR

G

--- Jonathan Cooper (1) - North Carolina . SR - 1st team all-ACC - 1st team AP all-America
--- Cyril Richardson (1) - Baylor . JR - Big 12 offensive lineman of the year - 2nd team AP all-America

C

--- Patrick Lewis (1) - Texas A&M . SR

WR

--- Cobi Hamilton - Arkansas . SR -  1st team all-SEC - 3rd team AP all-America - 90 receptions for 1,335 yards and 5 TD
--- DeAndre Hopkins (2) - Clemson . JR - 1st team all-ACC - 3rd team AP all-America - 82 receptions for 1,405 yards and 18 TD
--- Markus Wheaton (2) - Oregon State . SR - 1st team all-Pac 12 - 91 receptions for 1,244 yards and 11 TD; 142 yards and 2 TD rushing

RB

--- Todd Gurley - Georgia . FR - 2nd team all-SEC - 222 carries for 1,385 yards (6.2 average per carry) and 17 TD; 16 receptions for 117 yards
--- Eddie Lacy - Alabama . JR - 1st team all-SEC - 204 carries for 1,322 yards (6.5) and 17 TD; 22 receptions for 189 yards and 2 TD

QB

--- Denard Robinson (2) - Michigan . SR - 89 for 167 (53.3%) for 1,319 yards passing and 9 TD (9 INT); 177 carries for 1,266 yards and 7 TD rushing

KR

--- Cordarrelle Patterson - Tennessee . JR - 2nd team all-SEC - 24 KR for 671 yards (28.0) and 1 TD
.

Anchoring the O-line are all-America guards Jonathan Cooper (above) and Cyril Richardson (right). Cooper will be a 1st round pick in this year's NFL draft. And Richardson will be a 1st round pick too - next year. Although ranked as the #1 guard in the junior class, he's staying at Baylor for his senior year.

.

Xavier Nixon (left, working against South Carolina LB Shaq Wilson on Oct. 20) was considered a bit of an underachiever during his career with the Gators, but some NFL team will give him a shot and try to get him to reach his potential. Patrick Lewis (below) may be the best center with dreads but unfortunately is not considered a serious NFL prospect.

.

The leaping TD catch by DeAndre Hopkins (right) was a big part of the Clemson playbook in 2012 and a happy sight for Tigers fans. After losing his Clemson single-season record for receiving yards to Sammy Watkins last season, Hopkins took it back this year with a spectacular 1,405-yard performance. Although I would liked to have seen Hopkins and Watkins together one more year, DeAndre understandably is entering the NFL draft this year. And speaking of spectacular, Georgia did not miss Isaiah Crowell (who transferred) at all thanks to the fantastic rookie season turned in by Todd Gurley (below).

.

As usual, yards came easier for Denard Robinson on the ground than through the air (he finished 70th in the FBS in passing and 15th in rushing); but clearly, despite being hindered by an elbow injury late in the season, he had the best 2012 performance by any QB with dreads.

.

2nd TEAM DEFENSE

DT

--- Josh Boyd (1) - Mississippi State . SR - 33 tackles (8-25), 2.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 1 FR, 1 BLK
--- Timmy Jernigan - Florida State . SOPH - 2nd team all-ACC - 46 tackles (22-24), 8 TFL, 1.5 sacks

DE

--- Ed Stinson - Alabama . JR - 30 tackles (20-10), 8.5 TFL, 3 sacks
--- Tourek Williams - FIU . SR - 1st team all-SBC - 46 tackles (29-17), 14.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks. 2 PBU, 2 FF

LB

--- Lamin Barrow - LSU . JR - 104 tackles (52-52), 7.5 TFL, 5 PBU, 2 FR, 1 FF
--- Taylor Reed (HM) - SMU . SR - 2nd team all-CUSA - 97 tackles (62-35), 14.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks, 2 PBU, 3 INT, 2 FR, 1 FF, 2 TD

CB
--- Adrian Bushell - Louisville . SR - 1st team all-Big East - 62 tackles (45-17), 1.5 TFL, 13 PBU, 1 INT, 3 FR
--- Desmond Trufant - Washington . SR - 1st team all-Pac 12 - 36 tackles (27-9), 4.5 TFL, 1 sack, 9 PBU, 1 INT, 1 FR, 1 FF, 1 BLK

S
--- Jonathan Cyprien (HM) - FIU . SR - 1st team all-SBC - 93 tackles (54-39), 3.5 TFL, 5 PBU, 4 INT, 1 FF
--- Kemal Ishmael - UCF . SR - CUSA defensive player of the year - 124 tackles (68-56), 5 TFL, 1 sack, 4 PBU, 3 INT, 3 FR, 3 FF
--- Shamarko Thomas - Syracuse . SR - 1st team all-Big East - 84 tackles (60-24), 3 TFL, 1 sack, 2 INT, 1 FR, 3 FF

PR
--- Keiwone Malone - Memphis . SOPH - 22 PR for 261 yards (11.9 average - ranked 19th in FBS) and 0 TD
.

Although Josh Boyd (above) didn't have big numbers this season, you still might very well see him on Sundays next season. Tourek Williams (right), on the other hand, had outstanding stats, but likely will have to take the undrafted free agent route to the NFL.
.

LSU junior Lamin Barrow never met a ball carrier he didn't like to tackle, including Heisman winner Johnny Manziel here on Oct. 20. Barrow reached double figures in tackles 4 times in 2012.

There were 7 safeties that I just had to include on the team, so there are 3 (and only 2 LB) on the 2nd team. The three all had outstanding senior seasons. Known more for his hard hits, Shamarko Thomas (below) shows he can catch too, getting the 1st of his 2 INT this season against USC on Sept. 8. Kemal Ishmael (right) was everywhere for the UCF defense, averaging 8.9 tackles while also getting 3 picks, 3 FF, and 3 FR to earn CUSA defensive player of the year honors. But Jonathan Cyprien (not pictured) is the best NFL prospect of the three.

.
2nd TEAM OFFENSE

OT

--- Seantrel Henderson - Miami (F) . JR - HM all-ACC
--- LaAdrian Waddle (1) - Texas Tech . SR - 1st team all-Big 12

G

--- Tre' Jackson - Florida State . SOPH - 2nd team all-ACC
--- Dallas Thomas (2) - Tennessee . SR - 2nd team all-SEC

C
--- Josh Allen - Louisiana-Monroe . JR - 2nd team all-SBC

WR

--- Anthony Amos - MTSU . SR - 1st team all-SBC - 72 receptions for 992 yards and 9 TD
--- Cordarrelle Patterson - Tennessee . JR - 46 receptions for 778 yards and 5 TD; 25 carries for 308 yards and 3 TD rushing
--- Tevin Reese (2) - Baylor . JR - HM all-Big 12 - 53 receptions for 957 yards and 9 TD

RB

--- Andre Ellington (2) - Clemson . SR - 1st team all-ACC - 212 carries for 1,081 yards (5.1) and 8 TD; also 14 receptions for 232 and 1 TD
--- John Hubert (HM) - Kansas State . JR - 1st team all-Big 12 - 189 carries for 947 yards (5.0) and 15 TD; also 18 receptions for 98 yards and 1 TD

QB

--- Munchie Legaux - Cincinnati . JR - 120 for 230 (52.2%) for 1,716 yards passing and 13 TD (9 INT); 55 carries for 335 yards and 4 TD rushing

KR

--- Jerodis Williams - Furman . SR - 1st team all-SOCON - 16 KR for 574 yards (35.9) and 2 TD

6-foot-8, 340-pound Seantrel Henderson (left) came to the U with a lot of hype and started living up to it this season. At this time next year the NFL will be very interested in him.

After not doing much last season (after transferring from JC), Anthony Amos (right) broke out big time in 2012, catching at least 3 passes in every game. With Tevin Reese's dreads growing too slowly, I have to go with the helmetless shot (below) instead of an action photo. Tevin continued to be the ultimate deep threat this season - 8 of his 9 TD catches were for 40 yards or more.

John Hubert plays for Kansas State, so when he takes one to the house (left), as he did 16 times this season, you don't know that he has dreads. Only when the game is over (above) and he is allowed to get rid of that bag over his head do we get confirmation that he indeed does have dreads.
.
When Andre Ellington (below) runs his 40 at the NFL Combine later today, it will confirm that he's got blazing speed. But even though he started for Clemson, it's doubtful that he's big enough to be an every-down RB on Sundays. Munchie Legaux (right) had a disappointing 2012 season that saw him lose the job as UC's starting QB (perhaps if he would put his mouthpiece in, he would do better); but there aren't a lot of QBs with dreads, and he's 2nd best.

.
Jerodis Williams (right) took 2 kickoff returns to the house in 2012, including this one against Western Carolina on Sept. 29. Williams' 35.9 average was tops in the FCS. He also earned 1st team all-conference honors as a RB, rushing for 1,170 yards and 11 TD.

.
.
3rd TEAM DEFENSE

DT

--- Johnnie Farms - Memphis . JR - 2nd team all-CUSA - 38 tackles (17-21), 9.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 FR, 2 FF
--- Montori Hughes - Tennessee-Martin - 1st team all-OVC - 42 tackles (20-22), 8.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 PBU

DE

--- Denico Autry - Mississippi State . JR - 42 tackles (26-16), 9.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 PBU, 1 INT, 2 FF
--- Lavar Edwards - LSU . SR - 26 tackles (14-12), 7 TFL, 4.5 sacks, 1 INT

LB

--- Derrell Johnson - East Carolina - JR - 2nd team all-CUSA - 62 tackles (27-35), 11 TFL, 7 sacks, 2 FR
--- Shaq Thompson - Washington . FR - HM all-Pac 12 - 74 tackles (44-30), 8.5 TFL, 2 sacks, 3 PBU, 3 INT, 1 FR, 1 BLK
--- Shaq Wilson - South Carolina . SR - 86 tackles (45-41), 4.5 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 PBU, 2 INT, 1 FR, 2 FF

CB

--- Jemarlous Moten - Louisiana-Lafayette . SR - 1st team all-SBC - 65 tackles (49-16), 3.5 TFL, 8 PBU, 4 INT, 1 FR, 2 FF, 1 TD
--- Nickell Robey (2) - USC . JR - 2nd team all-Pac 12 - 52 tackles (36-16), 0.5 TFL, 4 PBU, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 BLK, 1 TD

S

--- Robert Lester - Alabama . SR - 2nd team all-SEC - 48 tackles (24-24), 3.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 3 PBU, 4 INT, 1 FR
--- Calvin Pryor - Louisville . SOPH - 2nd team all-Big East - 100 tackles (52-48), 2.5 TFL, 1 sack, 5 PBU, 2 INT, 1 FR, 5 FF

PR

--- Spencer Nelson - Prairie View A&M . SR - 1st team all-SWAC - 14 PR for 231 yards (16.5 average - ranks 4th in FCS) and 0 TD
.

After making a beautiful leaping INT on 3rd and goal, Shaq Wilson (above left) charges forward 37 yards on the return to midfield to set up South Carolina's 1st TD of the season. Lavar Edwards (above right) prepares to sack Towson QB Grant Enders during Week 5. There's a good chance you'll see Edwards at an NFL stadium near you next season; but probably not Wilson. You may have noticed that most of the players on the team from the SEC didn't earn all-SEC honors. That's because the SEC, the one league that really needs to list honorable mention selections, doesn't.
Outstanding as a freshman last season, Calvin Pryor, here tackling a Missouri State player in Week 2, was outstanding again in 2012 for the Big East champs. Pryor ranked 7th in the FBS with his 5 FF.
.
3rd TEAM OFFENSE

OT

--- Jason Weaver (HM) - Southern Mississippi . SR - HM all-CUSA
--- Brennan Williams - North Carolina . SR - HM all-ACC

G

--- Travis Bond - North Carolina . SR
--- A.J. Cann - South Carolina . SOPH

C

--- Bradley Bush-Johnson - Howard . SR - 2nd team all-MEAC

WR

--- Isaiah Burse - Fresno State . JR - HM all-MWC - 57 receptions for 851 yards and 6 TD; 39 yards and 1 TD rushing on 7 carries)
--- William Dukes - FAU . SOPH - 2nd team all-SBC - 63 receptions for 979 yards and 4 TD
--- J.D. McKissic - Arkansas State . FR - 2nd team all-SBC - 103 receptions for 1,022 yards and 5 TD

RB

--- Trayion Durham - Kent State . SOPH - 3rd team all-MAC - 276 carries for 1,316 yards (4.8) and 14 TD; also 17 receptions for 181 yards
--- Tre Mason - Auburn . SOPH - 171 carries for 1,002 yards (5.9) and 8 TD; also 7 receptions for 86 yards

QB

--- Greg Jenkins - Alabama State . SR - 137 for 234 (58.5%) for 1,691 yards passing and 9 TD (10 INT); 121 carries for 507 yards and 8 TD rushing

KR

--- Jameon Lewis - Mississippi State . SOPH - 20 KR for 517 yards (25.8 average - ranks 22nd in FBS) and 1 TD

I remember when I did my 1st all-America with dreads team back in 2008 how I had to struggle just to find enough good O-linemen to fill out a two-deep roster. Now there are so many O-linemen with dreads that this year's squad features three from one team. Joining fellow Tar Heel Jonathan Cooper on the team are Brennan Williams (#73) and Travis Bond (#76). Although his senior season was shortened (he missed 4 games) by a shoulder injury, Williams still earned all-conference honors and has a good chance to be playing on Sundays next season. Bond dropped a lot of pounds after his junior year and turned himself into an NFL prospect too.
.

Working out of the slot in Arkansas State's spread offense, redshirt freshman J.D.McKissic (right) was the only player with dreads to reach the 100-catch mark this season. And with dreads like those J.D. has a good chance to be on my dread all-America team too. Sophomore Tre Mason (below), who reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark on Auburn's final play of the season, has a very bright future.

I know I have criticized Greg Jenkins (right) in the past for not being accurate enough as a passer. But you know what? His .585 completion percentage in 2012 was the best among the 6 QBs under consideration for the team. But unless he wows the scouts with a career-best performance at ASU's pro day, Greg likely is headed for the CFL or Arena Football - or no career at all. There's certainly nothing wrong with his arm strength. I'd kind of like to see him give baseball a try.

.
.
That's the team for 2012. If you put them all together on the field for an actual game ..... well, it would be very difficult to score against them; but on offense, there's a lot of weapons, but who's going to get the ball to them?

HONORABLE MENTION
A list of players who had outstanding 2012 seasons, but not quite outstanding enough to make the team.

.

Marcus Williams (left) and Billy Turner (right), both from the Minneapolis area, have contributed in no small part to North Dakota State's back-to-back FCS championships. And since both are juniors, they'll both be back going for the three-peat next season. Turner moved into the starting lineup very early in his freshman season and has been a fixture at left OT ever since. Williams, also a starter early in his freshman year, very deservedly wears uniform #1. In addition to tying for the FCS lead with 7 INT this season, he ranked 7th with a 27.9 average on kickoff returns. His 98-yard return to the house in Week 12 was his 7th career TD ...... The team that the Bison defeated in both FCS championship games the last two seasons was .....

...... Sam Houston State, featuring twin brothers Darnell Taylor (#38) and Darius Taylor (#36). Darnell and Darius were both recruited by FBS schools, but not both by the same school. So to remain together they took their talents to Huntsville, TX, and have steadily improved throughout their careers, with both earning 1st team all-conference honors in 2012.

.

.
DTs rarely rack up big numbers on the stats sheet, so Samford senior Nicholas Williams (above) was under my radar all season. But apparently he is a legitimate NFL prospect. I don't know how he ended up at Bryant, but Jordan Harris (right), with one season still to go, already is the best WR to ever play in the NEC. He finished 2012 with 61 receptions for 1,243 yards (including two 200-yard games!) and 15 TD in 10 games.

NEXT
Now that we've seen who the best players with dreads were, we'll take a look at the players with the best dreads in my dread all-America team, coming soon (hopefully).
